Background:
The scarcity of research on the treatment-seeking behaviors for sexually transmitted infections STIs among men who have sex with men MSM in China prompted this study. Its objective was to characterize the initial response towards STI symptoms and associated factors influencing treatment-seeking behavior within this population.
:
A cross-sectional study utilizing a convenience sampling design took place across 13 Chinese cities from April to July 2017. Participants were interviewed face-to-face, collecting data on demographics, STI symptoms, and their subsequent responses towards treatment seeking. Logistic regression analysis was employed to identify factors linked with the non-seeking of medical intervention.
Findings:
Amongst 3925 participants surveyed, 628 16 reported experiencing STI symptoms in the preceding year. Upon recognizing these symptoms, MSM accessed various forms of help or self-tested using rapid testing kits; however, only 32251.3 sought professional medical attention at a clinic setting.
In conducting multivariate logistic regression analysis, the following factors were associated with an increased likelihood of not seeking treatment:
Younger age
Lower income levels
Lack of comprehensive STI knowledge
Not being aware of one's own risk for STIs
Absence of symptoms such as anogenital ulcers or warts
No previous syphilis testing within the past year
s:
This study highlights a high prevalence of STI symptoms among MSM in China, yet only half of those affected sought treatment. There is thus a need to enhance public health initiatives med at promoting STI education, regular testing, and encouraging appropriate medical consultation for this at-risk population.
