Miami Center for DS Research CFAR Clinical Sciences Core

The Miami CFAR Clinical Sciences Core plays a pivotal role as the premier clinical resource hub for the largest network of HIV researchers in South Florida, facilitating impactful translational and multidisciplinary research through collaborations among clinical, behavioral sciences, and basic scientists. This core supports HIV studies in adults by providing unique facilities equipped with full-service research units and mobile programs:

The University of Miami Infectious Diseases Unit at Converge Miami offers a 252,000 sq ft state-of-the-art research hub, including modular wet laboratories and preparation rooms. It is home to the University's tissue bank, the HIVDS and Emerging Infectious Diseases Institute HEIDI, Biomedical Nanotechnology Institute, UInnovation offices comprised of UM Technology Transfer and Wallace H. Coulter Center for Translational Research, alongside numerous commercial entities. The core has dedicated offices on the second floor, adjacent to the new HIV clinic featuring interview and examination rooms, pharmacy, laboratory, and co-located CFAR laboratory and freezer space.

The University of Miami Infectious Diseases Research Unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital is situated next to the Special Immunology Clinicthe largest outpatient facility for people living with HIV in Florida. This strategic location enables efficient clinical trial recruitment and enrollment across various research projects that cater to investigators at all career stages, linking potential participants to ongoing cohort studies and trials spanning diverse disciplines.

Additionally, the PrEP mobile service and Rapid Access Wellness Clinic are equipped with full medical facilities offering initial appointments and follow-ups alongside community-based HIV prevention study enrollments.

The Pediatric HIV treatment and prevention research is conducted by the International Maternal, Pediatric, Adolescent DS Clinical Trials IMPAACT Network's Clinical Trials Unit CTU team based at the Bachelor Children’s Pediatric Institute. Funded by NID, this unit has been continuously supported for almost three decades with a stellar record of performing numerous clinical trials investigating long-term complications of novel antiretrovirals in pediatric and adolescent populations affected by HIV as well as perinatal intervention studies med at preventing mother-to-child transmission.

The Clinical Sciences Core supports the Miami CFAR objectives through:

  1. Providing advanced facilities for implementing clinical and translational research, including support for assessments, sample collection, and access to data.

  2. Offering methodological guidance and technical expertise in adhering to regulatory standards in research involving subjects, data, and biological materials, as well as facilitating investigator trningeducation in clinical research design and biostatistics.

  3. Collaborating with the Biostatistics Sub-core of the Biostatistics Collaboration and Consulting Core for research design support.
