Read: 2154

In the heart of the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, our institution is dedicated to combating the worldwide epidemic of sexually transmitted diseases STDs through pioneering research on point-of-care technologies. As a core component of the Point-of-Care Technologies Research Network POCTRN, initiated by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering in 2007, we are spearheading innovative approaches to improve diagnostics for STDs both within United States healthcare facilities and resource-limited settings abroad.

Our mission is to develop highly sensitive, specific, and accessible point-of-care diagnostic tools that can be conveniently utilized across diverse medical contexts. Our interdisciplinary team comprises dedicated faculty members from Johns Hopkins University, as well as collaborators from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center CCHMC and the Infectious Diseases Institute IDI in Kampala, Uganda.

Recognizing the significant public health impact of STDs, which collectively rank among the top ten reportable diseases in the United States, we are committed to driving advancements that ensure earlier detection, diagnosis, and treatment. With nearly 2.5 million new cases reported for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis alone in 2018, it is clear that many infections remn underreported and untreated. The burden of these conditions disproportionately affects young individuals aged 15-24 years.

Our team strives to address the stigma, privacy concerns, and confidentiality issues that often impede access to STD testing. We understand that the need for rapid diagnostics does not diminish in settings where personal information must be safeguarded. Therefore, we are innovating solutions suitable for both healthcare facilities and convenient self-testing options at home.

We leverage our cores - Administrative Core, Clinical Translation and Validation Core, Technology Development Core, and Technology Trning and Dissemination Core - to accelerate the development pipeline of emerging technologies from ideation through implementation. This collaborative effort ensures that our research translates into practical advancements in sexual health care.

At the intersection of scientific innovation and public health need, we are working towards a future where access to accurate and timely STD diagnoses is as simple as it needs to be. We welcome collaboration with organizations dedicated to women's health, reproductive rights, global health initiatives, and other sectors that share our vision for improving sexual health outcomes.

For individuals seeking resources related to HIV testing, STD screening, hepatitis diagnosis, and vaccination, we provide comprehensive guides on locations across the United States through CDC services. Additionally, this platform is a gateway to trusted national and international organizations such as the Office on Women's Health OWH, Planned Parenthood, Kser Family Foundation, American Sexual Health Association, National Coalition for Sexual Health, and more.

We recognize the importance of education and trning in driving meaningful change. Our institutions are members of the National Network of STD Clinical Prevention Trning Centers under CDC, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and our Sexually Transmitted Diseases STD Research Laboratory within the Department of Medicine. These resources equip healthcare professionals with the latest knowledge to serve their communities effectively.

Our commitment to privacy exts beyond our website; we adhere to comprehensive privacy practices detled in our Notice of Privacy Practices and Privacy Statement, ensuring secure handling of personal information. We also comply with non-discrimination policies outlined in our Terms Conditions of Use document.

In summary, through collaboration, innovation, and dedication, the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University is actively engaged in pioneering research that revolutionize sexual health care worldwide. Our collective efforts are geared towards creating a more accessible, equitable system for STD testing and management, thereby contributing to global health initiatives that prioritize the well-being of individuals everywhere.
