University of Maryland Prevention Research Center: A Multidisciplinary Initiative to Improve Health Outcomes for Sexual and Ger Minority Communities
The University of Maryland Prevention Research Center UMD-PRC is a multidisciplinary community of scholars dedicated to developing evidence-based solutions med at preventing health issues and enhancing well-being among sexual and ger minority populations. Rooted in prevention science, an interdisciplinary field that focuses on identifying strategies to mitigate risk factors and strengthen protective elements for individuals, families, and communities, UMD-PRC addresses critical areas such as mental health, substance use disorders, reproductive health, and violence prevention.
UMD-PRC collaborates closely with local communities to conduct pioneering research med at mitigating the impact of chronic disease disparities. Underfunded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC, this initiative supports 26 Prevention Research Centers across the United States dedicated to tackling public health challenges through evidence-based solutions that can be widely implemented.

The University of Maryland Prevention Research Center engages in a range of research projects focusing on chronic disease prevention, health promotion, and addressing disparities. PRCs are funded for five years to mntn their research center and develop innovative strategies to promote health while mitigating the risks associated with various diseases and disabilities. The solutions developed by these centers m not only to improve community health but also enhance the public health workforce capacity.
Core Research Project: RCT of the Sexual and Ger Diversity Learning Community
This project involves a randomized controlled trial of learning communities centered on sexual and ger diversity, ming to foster educational initiatives that can be applied across diverse populations.
Leveraging Amazon MTurk for LGBTQ+ Mental Health Care Needs Assessment
The team utilizes Amazon Mechanical Turk MTurk to assess the specific mental health care needs within the LGBTQ+ community, providing insights critical for developing targeted interventions.
Implementing Tobacco Control Strategies for Achieving Health Equity: Engaging LGBTQ Communities in Maryland
